Awesome wines from Alto at Souk

19 April 2018

Alto is one of those iconic brands that just keep on making incredibly good red wines.  The Alto Rouge needs no introduction and it has been too long since I tasted their wines, so I jumped at the invitation to join a media lunch/tasting at Souk, and have the younger generation Bertho vd Westhuizen take us through a couple of vintages of the Veritas Gold Alto Rouge, the Cabernets and the Shirazes.  Simply yum.

Bertho took over from his dad Schalk in 2015 and before him, the farm was in the hands of the the du Toit family with the famous rugby-player and barefooted Hempies du Toit and his dad making the wine before them. There is a great legacy and tradition in the Alto brand.  Bertho is in fact only the 5th winemaker on the farm and is clearly continuing the good work of his predecessors!
The wines were rich, intense and just delicious - a perfect accompaniment for the very heart-warming meaty dishes at Souk, a relatively new eatery (to me anyway) on Long Street in the city of Cape Town.

The Alto rouge is an excellent buy at only R114, and after our event yesterday - went on to be awarded as one of the top Blends in the Cabernet Franc awards.
If you are looking for age-worthy wines for your children's significant birthdays - I suggest you stock up now and hide some away, as you will be hard pressed to leave them in your cellar without enjoying them before then!
