Yonder Hill Newsletter Autumn 2017

18 April 2017  -  Yonder Hill

Message From Our Winemaker

"In spite of a very dry summer, our vineyards did well. The grapes were healthy with smaller berries which led to good quality harvest. It is definitely a better vintage than 2016 and I believe the grapes have more colour, structure and flavour," says winemaker Abe Beukes now that the 2017 vintage is safely in the cellar.

"In general the chemical analysis also looks good except that the late ripening varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon were a little low on the acidity by the time they were fully ripe.   Luckily we could fix that by blending with the Petit Verdot which keeps its natural acidity very well. The Merlot is also showing good colour and character.

We’ve made the selection for our Y Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and are busy with the final preparations for bottling. The wine looks as good as the successful 2016 and we hope to release it in May.

Our long term planning in the vineyards include innovations to handle the expected lower rainfall in future. We have to make use of our natural rainfall optimally and we should ensure that our soil is not unnecessarily exposed to the sun. More about this in our next newsletter."

We’ve increased our range this year with a Rosé which is a light pink colour with a lower alcohol %,  perfect for lunch or just as a casual drink on a hot sunny day.   The Danilo Rosé is a blend of Merlot and Grenache. We are all really excited about this newcomer who will be available in time for spring and summer.
