Fun in the Sun: Winelands Activities before Winter Hits

We’ve all felt that nip in the air, seen days get shorter with a later sunrise and earlier sunset. A change of season is coming, but the summer sunshine fun isn’t over just yet. Here’s a list of winelands activities to enjoy before sunny festivals with chilled whites make way for cosy fireplaces with comforting reds.

Stellenbosch Street Soiree – 21 March

Have a last blast with the last Street Soiree for the season taking place on Wednesday, 21 March.  At this upbeat pop-up party, cars make way for enthusiasts to sample unique dishes at street stalls, while wine farms offer delicious vintages to wash away those mid-week blues.

Each Stellenbosch Street Soiree features a different selection of cellars and caterers and entry costs R100 pp which gets you a glass and a ticket to taste as many wines as there are on offer.

Backsberg Picnic Concerts – 18 March

This popular Paarl winery are wrapping up their 10th annual picnic concert series with a bang – featuring Bottomless Coffee Band on Sunday, 18 March.

Take full advantage of the long summer days by ending off the weekend lazing under the trees enjoying fine wines, great food and live music by great local talent.  Kids get to have their own fun too with jumping castles and lawn games.

Picnic boxes are available for purchase with your ticket and wine, beer, ciders and an assortment of easy foods such as wraps, burgers and fries are available to purchase on site.

Tapas & Wine: Sunsets @ Stellenbosch Vineyards – 23 March

Have a Friday foodie night with a local twist on the popular trend of communal eating. You can enjoy a selection of foods with your favourite Stellenbosch Vineyards’ wines while you sit back and relax with live entertainment.

Look forward to delicious snacking options such as Weskus ‘viskoekies’, Cape Malay style bobotie spring rolls and classic Portuguese style tempura veggies.

Galileo Open Air Cinema @ Plaisir de Merle – 7 April

On select Saturdays, The Galileo Open Air Cinema heads to the winelands to combine the perfect package of wine and movies under the stars. On the 7th of April, catch popular romantic drama The Notebook at Plaisir de Merle in The Franschhoek Wine Valley.

Doors open at 17h00 and the movie starts at sunset. It’s the perfect opportunity to make a day of it and explore the winelands. Arrive early and get the best spot before grabbing some artisanal food and a bottle of wine to enjoy while watching the movie on the beautiful lawn under the stars.

Live Summer Sunday Concerts at Vergenoegd – 25 March & 8 April

There’s just so much more appeal to listening to some of your favourite artists on a lawn surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Come winter, we’ll be forced to seek entertainment  in stadiums and unimaginative venues while being trampled by hundreds of other spectators but for now, summer offers us the opportunity to have a relaxed outdoor experience in some of the most beautiful settings.

On Sunday, 25 March Arno Carstens will take to the stage with Cape Town electro-swing band GoodLuck set to entertain the crowd on the 8th of April. A festive food market will be set up on the estate’s lawns with a variety of food options. The dedicated children’s village will be sure to keep the little ones entertained, giving parents time to relax and enjoy the celebration.

Gates open at 11h00 with opening performances kicking off at 12h00 and the headline band on stage at 16h00.

Jakkalsvlei Sundown Festival – 21 April

Bid the summer sun farewell with Garden Route winery Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar’s Sundown Festival.

Enjoy good food, music, wine & cocktails against the backdrop of the majestic mountains and vineyards and make memories that last. Visitors can enjoy the acclaimed Jakkalsvlei wines and craft beer range with customized cheese platters, build-your-own pizzas and gourmet burgers. The festival line-up includes William Ferreira, Coffee Snobs, Johnny Wolf and River Tunes which will take care of the entertainment from 10h00 till 18h00.
