22 Years of Cab Franc Celebrated at Avontuur Estate

On 3 May, the Avontuur team, a group of guests and winemaker Jan van Rooyen enjoyed a vertical tasting of Avontuur Cabernet Francs from 2008 till today. This was to commemorate the 22 years of the production of a single varietal of this wine at this Stellenbosch winery.

The first vintage of a single varietal Cabernet Franc produced at Avontuur was from the 1996 harvest followed by a 1999 vintage which was reviewed in John Platter’s Wine Guide of 2001.  Including those first two, Avontuur has produced nine bottled vintages over the last 22 years. To celebrate this heritage, the Estate is now in the fourth year of sponsoring the annual Cabernet Franc Carnival, which takes place at Avontuur on 19 May this year.

In April this year Avontuur was proud to be awarded a Gold Medal for its 2010 Cabernet Franc as part of the Cab Franc Challenge competition’s Vintage category.  “This proves the maturation potential of the varietal and was also the inspiration for today’s Vertical Tasting and Food Pairing,” says winemaker Jan van Rooyen.

After the tasting, guests were treated to a Cab Franc-inspired menu in the Avontuur Estate Restaurant.  Jan and Restaurant co-owner and Chef Zunia Boucher-Myers spent a few hours over the last few months tasting the older vintages to ensure the pairings work optimally without over-shadowing either the wine or the food.

“We are huge Cab Franc fans and love hosting the Carnival as well as the Cab Franc Challenge at the farm.  Marketing for this unusual varietal is definitely needed and we hope to contribute towards the awareness of the grape with our ongoing support,” says Avontuur’s Philip Taberer.

The 2014 Cabernet Franc and the Cab Franc led Baccarat 2012 will be available for tasting at the Cab Franc Carnival on 19 May, which will give festival goers a good overview of the quality of this wine.  Tickets for the Carnival from www.plankton.mobi at R220 or at R250 at the event.
