Avontuur Estate Newsletter August 2018

13 August 2018  -  Avontuur Estate

In August we celebrate everything female with special treats for ladies in our tasting room, the annual mares and foals walks later in the month and the start of birthing season. Our first little one was by award-winning sire Trippi out of champion race mare Val de Ra and we look forward to welcoming further arrivals.

SEASON ENDS ON A HIGH FOR SIRES AND FARM
At the end of this year’s season on the 31st of July, Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm is proud to announce that our champion sire Var retained his 2 yo sire’s top position with 21 winners for a total of R2 564 100 in stakes. Oratorio came in in third place which was a pleasant surprise as he is not known for his precocious stock. He sired 14 winners for a total stakes of R2 142 755, just a few hundred thousand behind champion Captain Al. “With the season having just started, he already has three winners” says Avontuur GM Pippa Mickleburgh. “It was a solid season with Avontuur in 13th place in the standings. Avontuur-bred horses won just over R6 million and the average for runners bred at Avontuur was R84 829,” she concluded.

LYLE HEWITSON TAKES JOCKEY’S CROWN
As expected Avontuur-sponsored Lyle Hewitson was awarded the top spot in this year’s SA Jockey’s Championship and we are thrilled for him! Although currently struggling with a knee injury, this young man is not resting on his laurels and is still helping out where he can, whilst following doctor’s orders obviously.

MARES AND FOALS WALKS SET FOR THIS MONTH
With access to the stud operation usually limited to the general public, the annual Mares and Foals Walk is the one and only chance to get up close and personal with our beautiful mares, foals and stallions. This year’s dates are Thursday 23 August (already fully booked!) and Thursday 30 August. Participants are invited to arrive at 09h30 after which the guided walk will set off taking in the stunning setting of the farm, the paddocks and the stables, providing info about the thoroughbred stud operation and giving lots of opportunities for pics. After returning to the winery, a speciality wine tasting is offered after which the Avontuur Estate Restaurant will serve a light lunch. The cost is R350 pp and pre-bookings and payments are required by contacting Ella or Carmen at winery@avontuurestate.co.za or +27.218553450. Limited numbers per day make this an intimate experience!
