Morgenster updates visitor experience, plants vineyards and releases four wines

2 October 2018  -  Morgenster Estate

Morgenster has completed major renovations and redecorated its tasting room in time for the summer visitor season. Alessandra Bertrand said: “Although we are still waiting for some furniture, visitors will already notice the changes which we hope they will enjoy.

We have also updated our wine tasting offering so people can make their own selection from our Bordeaux, Italian Collection and single varietal ranges”.

Federica Bertrand commented that the boutique hotel which her father had hoped to open by the end of the year to expand the Estate’s visitor experience was still at planning approval stage. “While we are looking forward to seeing it built we are having to be patient at the moment”, she said.

“One important part of our father’s third decade plan, the extension of the vineyards, has been completed. New vineyards have been established adding two hectares of Vermentino, two hectares of Sangiovese, one hectare of Nebbiolo as well as one hectare of Semillon. This brings Morgenster close to its target of 40 ha”, Federica said.

Morgenster has just released four vintages of its single varietal wines. This range, made in an accessible, fruit driven style, enhances the unique characteristics that the Morgenster terroir lends to the grapes. They also offer interesting insights into the dynamics of blending by showcasing each grape’s contribution before they go into the Estate’s prized blends.

All are available from selected retailers, the Estate or online at

Morgenster Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
The nose reveals classical Cabernet Sauvignon traits of lush cassis concentrated fruit. In the mouth rich red fruit flavours abound, layering black currants, cherries and plums and undertones of warm spice and tobacco. Sumptuously smooth with some fine tannins to broaden palate weight. Around R110 a bottle.

Morgenster Cabernet Franc 2016
Cabernet Franc traits are evident in the lush cassis concentrated fruit and cinnamon, with peanut and clove-like spice on the nose. Mouth filling and smooth. Rich black currant, cherry and plum flavours tease the tongue while fine tannins broaden the palate weight. Around R115 a bottle.

Morgenster Sangiovese 2018
Morgenster’s version of Chianti Classico is a delicious anytime, anywhere wine, light fresh and fruit driven. A complex bouquet features cassis, cherry, raspberry, coffee, almond and vanilla with subtle notes of rose petals, lavender and some mint. At first the palate picks up fruit sweetness followed by a lingering freshness of cherry and strawberry. Tannins are well managed and soft.  Around R110 a bottle.

Morgenster Vespri 2018
This aromatic grape variety adds a white to the existing cast of reds in Morgenster’s Italian Collection. Flinty minerality is the initial response, but also a sweet muscat perfume, yellow fruit and ripe peach. The palate is full, rich, ripe and flavoursome overlaid with sweet muscat fruit notes and with a zingy acidity that is not overwhelming. Around R125 a bottle.
