1 July 2019  -  Simonsig Wine Estate

Wine-lovers and collectors will once again be given a rare chance to taste and buy older vintages of wines made on Simonsig, one of Stellenbosch’s oldest and best-known wine estates.

The seventh Simonsig Vintage Wine Day is to be held on the Estate on Friday 2 August where visitors can taste a range of specially selected wines representing Simonsig’s finest vintages of the new millennium and a handful of gems from the 1990’s.

Simonsig is one of South Africa’s pioneering wine estates and famous for its selection of quality red and white wines, as well as being the birthplace of Kaapse Vonkel, the country’s first bottle-fermented sparkling wine known today as Méthode Cap Classique.

During the Vintage Day, visitors will have a rare opportunity to taste and purchase vintage Kaapse Vonkel MCC wines, as well as super vintages of Simonsig’s iconic Redhill Pinotage which is the recipient of numerous Top 10 Pinotage Awards as well as an array of local and international accolades. Other vintage wines that can be tasted include the Merindol Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tiara Bordeaux-style blend and Frans Malan Cape Blend.

A highlight will be a Masterclass: Five Decades of Cabernet Sauvignon will be presented by Simonsig’s Director of Wine Johan Malan and Cellarmaster Debbie Thompson in which this famed estate’s illustrious Cabernet Sauvignon pedigree will be discussed and illustrated through a sublime selection of wines for tasting. According to Thompson Simonsig’s Vintage Day offers wine-lovers the chance to experience wines that had benefited from maturation under optimum storage conditions to reach their optimum maturity.

“In today’s market it is not always possible for the public to obtain older vintages, yet we at Simonsig experience a constant demand from people wishing to buy wines aged five years and older,” says Thompson. “And this day is for them. During the Vintage Day we literally open up our cellars allowing visitors to taste and buy from our older stocks. This is a unique opportunity to experience wines that have been accorded the time to age under ideal conditions, many of which have become true gems over the passage of time.”
