What's Bubbling - Harvest 2020 at Villiera Wines

16 March 2020  -  Villiera Wines

The 2020 Harvest began early January, approximately 3 weeks earlier than in 1984, when we harvested our first Cap Classique. This indicates the massive effect that "Climate Change" has had on ripening.

Having said that, we have had our hot days, but the usual prolonged heat wave has been later this year and we are happy with the quality. Quantity is also almost back to normal after 4 years of drought.

Climate Change has certainly wreaked havoc in Australia, where "bush fires" have been raging out of control for months and their wine industry has been badly affected. It has been terrible to witness and our hearts go out to them. Closer to home, we all felt the pain of the destruction of Lismore Wines, near Greyton. The flare up in December was driven by strong winds across the mountain side, destroying everything in its path. The Lismore cellar, homestead and the majority of the vineyards were burnt to the ground. It will rise from the ashes because Samantha O’Keefe, owner / winemaker and fellow Cape Winemaker's Guild member, will not let it die.

Our Wines

Our Cap Classiques have been flying over the festive season and we have also become known as a reliable source of quality bubbly for weddings. An added benefit is that we can supply a full house of wine for weddings.

Our Reserve wines have been growing in popularity and we have released our new vintages of Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc, Barrel Fermented Chenin and Monro Merlot. The Stand Alone Gamay 2018 is sold out and the follow on vintage (2019) will be released in Winter this year. Our Dakwijn was also a big hit and we sold out quickly with the follow on vintage (2019) only available next year.

Domaine Grier, France

The 2019 vintage was a good quality vintage and the Rosé is already in the country. It is a dry, refreshing Rosé made in the classic Southern French style. Winter in the Roussillon region has been wet, with extensive flooding occurring twice, which should replenish ground water after a couple of dry years. A range of our Domaine Grier wines are available at our Tasting Room and can be tasted along with our Reserve Wines at R115.00 per person for a selection of 6.

Terroir Tasting

We have always felt that to truly appreciate a wine, you need to see where it comes from. To realize this, we will transport guests on open game vehicles to 3 vineyard blocks where we will taste the wines from those blocks. Accompanying canapés will be served.
