Top 100 SA Wine podium slots for the flagship Villiera Monro Brut and Villiera Monro Merlot

The National Wine Challenge / Top 100 SA Wine Results 2020 rate the Villiera Prestige Cuvée Monro Brut and Monro Merlot as Double Platinum winners earning them Top 100 SA Wine status.

The show must go on, as the expression goes, and despite the #SAWineLockdown, such is the case with the array of wine competitions for 2020. The first results out this year are the premier National Wine Challenge, incorporating the Top 100 SA Wines. This highly regarded fine-wine-only competition attracted over five hundred entries this year.

Villiera are delighted to achieve two Top 100 SA Wine positions for the Villiera Monro Brut 2013 and the Villiera Monro Merlot 2018, both receiving Double Platinum Awards. The Monro brand is used for Villiera’s flagship range, proudly carrying a Grier family name. Cap Classique is a focus category at Villiera with the Monro Brut representing the pinnacle of what Villiera produce. The distinctive quality of the Villiera Monro Brut 2013 has also been recognised by SAWi achieving the highest scoring wine overall in the SAWi GWC classification and Best in MCC Category in 2019. It is a classical blend with a portion fermented in used oak barrels for extra complexity and perfected with time.

Monro Merlot symbolizes the dedication and focus given to this variety at Villiera. “Through vineyard selection, techniques and preferential barrel use, we maximize what we can achieve with Merlot at Villiera," says Jeff Grier, Villiera Cellarmaster. The Monro Merlot also carries a 4 ½ Star Platter rating.

In addition, Villiera Tradition Brut NV achieved a NWC Double Gold, affirming the Grier’s passion and expertise in the Cap Classique category. Produced by Villiera since 1984, this stalwart in the Villiera stable has built up a plethora of awards spanning decades, proving its enduring quality. Villiera Tradition Brut is a blend of red and white grapes displaying the full, balanced yeasty complexity synonymous with a wine made in this style.

Silver Awards were also received for the Villiera Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2019, Villiera Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc 2019 and the Stand Alone Gamay Noir 2019.

The Villiera Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc comes from three old vineyard blocks, two trellised and one bush vine. Winemaker, Nathan Valentine’s skill and passion for this varietal is evident with the Grand Gold SAWi classification, 92 point Tim Atkin rating and 4 ½ Star Platter Wine Guide also received in recognition of this wines unique terroir and character. 

From 2016, Villiera changed the direction of its Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc, opting to give it a greater point of difference, believing that the intensity of fruit allowed it to benefit from barrel treatment. The Villiera Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc is made from an old, single bush vine vineyard with the weather station clone. The 2019 will be released soon and is Villiera’s second wine to be registered with the “Old Vine Project”.

A creation by Xander Grier (fourth generation in the family business), the Stand Alone Gamay Noir 2019, comes from a single vineyard registered with the “Old Vine Project”. For their Stand Alone wines, Villiera’s winemaking philosophy is minimal intervention through the whole winemaking process, to produce vintage and site-specific wines. Only 3 barrels of this fine wine were produced.
