Avant-Garde Restaurant at Hazendal

Avant-Garde pushes boundaries through its contemporary and creative interpretation of South African and Russian recipes and the fusion of these two cultures. With a focus on the quality of the ingredients, each creation is framed by Hazendal’s fine wines, in addition to labels from neighbouring wineries in the Bottelary region. The restaurant’s interior is complemented with a hand-painted mural ceiling, an exotic aquarium, full bar and views of the neighbouring wine cellar’s impressive stainless-steel tanks behind glass panels. The restaurant’s menu is inspired by South African and Russian traditional recipes with a globally inspired contemporary interpretation. Each dish focuses on seasonality, with fresh ingredients being prepared to create a feast for the senses. The menu changes frequently according to the availability of products and produce from local farmers. The use of food and wine as a means to share a story is evident in the restaurant’s menu.

From 16h00 - 19h00, Avant-Garde offers a Zakuski (Russian-inspired tapas-style food) menu, that is perfect for a leisurely after-work dinner with the sunset setting behind the Bottelary Hills. The Zakuski menu is also ideal for families with young children who wish to enjoy an early dinner.

Babushka Deli

An “urban farmhouse kitchen” is probably the best way to describe Babushka Deli. The delicatessen fuses South Africa’s predilection for home cooking with nourishing Russian treats, inspired by the cooking traditions of babushkas (Russian grandmothers). Using high quality locally produced ingredients from suppliers who wholeheartedly embrace organic and sustainable farming principles, the Babushka Deli makes a spontaneous or planned visit to Hazendal one that satisfies an appetite for authentic, freshly baked goods with an emphasis on healthy eating.

The deli’s sit-down menu includes lighter meals, sandwiches and modern bistro style food, which can be enjoyed with the estate’s wines, fresh juices and local craft drinks. There is a menu for the younger gourmands which is approved by moms and even the fussiest small palate.

The deli’s shelves stock a bounty of products, many of which are made in Babushka’s kitchen, including pickles, preserves, relishes and oat and chia-seed mixes as well as interesting spice blends and rubs. There is also a tempting selection of premium deli items sourced from local and international suppliers and a collection of authentic Russian hand-crafted souvenirs.

When it comes to take-away items, the Babushka Deli makes a range of fresh and healthy salads and sandwiches plus a selection of custom made pastries that are a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. These pastries can be enjoyed at Hazendal or taken home in beautifully packaged gift cartons - ideal as a treat for someone special, or to add flavour to a home tea party or dinner.

No bookings are required, but you are welcome to secure your table. Reservations for groups larger than 8 require a deposit.

Russian Tea Garden

High tea will never be the same after experiencing Hazendal’s Russian Tea Ceremony in Hazendal’s Russian Tea Garden. Spanning generations, Russian tea-drinking has become an integral part of the country’s culture, highlighting the principles of friendship and warm hospitality. During Hazendal’s Russian Tea Ceremony, a specially sourced and imported black Russian tea blend is served from a steaming Samovar (ornate Russian tea urn) and presented in traditional hand-painted porcelain tea sets from the Dulevo porcelain factory, one of the oldest and most famous porcelain producers in Russia. The tea ritual is a visually intriguing experience that breathes new life into age-old tea brewing customs. Little guests can enjoy a specially designed tea menu and show off their artistic talents with Russian-themed colouring-in pages. With each table donning a distinct table setting, and the garden’s relaxed atmosphere, Hazendal’s Russian Tea Ceremony is a culturally rich and exquisite experience for young and old.

Walk-in guests who have not pre-booked for the Russian Tea Ceremony, can enjoy the Garden Menu in the beautiful and tranquil garden.

Sunset Zakuski

An al fresco celebration at the end of the day.

Hazendal’s Zakuski (Russian-inspired tapas-like food) are ideal for sharing and for tasting a variety of different flavours and textures. This social dining experience is complemented by a wine and cocktail menu plus beautiful African sunset views of the Bottelary Hills and Simonsberg in the distance. Zakuski are great for families with young children who are looking for an early mid-week meal in a relaxed environment or for a get-together after work.

Hazendal Babushka Picnics

Seasonal ingredients. Pure relaxation for friends and family.

Hazendal’s picnic baskets pair well with the sun on one’s shoulders and grass beneath one’s feet. Beautiful bespoke wicker baskets are filled with South African and Russian al fresco food made from the highest quality seasonal, fresh, and local ingredients. Pre-book one of Hazendal’s scenic picnic spots where your basket will be waiting for you. Choose your wine and enjoy your day with family and friends.

Bookings and deposits are essential. The picnics are available at 10h00 or at 13h00. The seasonal picnic menus do change depending on availability of fresh farm produce.
