Oldenburg Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2020, so good with Carey Boucher Erasmus’s Courgette, Herb & Goat’s Cheese Fritters

21 April 2021  -  Michael Olivier

Oldenburg Wine Estate is in the cooer part of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation in the Banghoek Valley on the East facing side of the Simonsberg. Cooler than the Western side of the Mountain.

The grapes for this wine, are grown with minimal intervention in the vineyards to reflect the mountain career. The confluence of the 8 Natural Elements that determine Oldenburg’s unique terroir is explored through these wines and their real sense of place.

The grapes were hand harvested from a 14-year-old single vineyard, planted on alluvial soils, at 320m above sea level. Bunches were sorted by hand and whole bunch pressed in a pneumatic press on a gentle Champagne cycle. The juice was settled overnight and then racked to previous fill 300 L French oak barrels, concrete eggs and a new 2500 L Austrian oak Foudre. Spontaneous fermentation completed within 2-3 months. Partial malolactic conversion was done on some of the batches. The wine was matured for 11 months in oak. It was gently fined and filtered before bottling.

From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is quirky, though informing of the 8 natural elements od Oldenburg’s unique terroir. In the glass, it is a gem bright pale straw colour. The aromas are classical Chenin. Golden Apples, white fleshed peaches, desiccated pineapple, white flowers and honey. The palate from entry has a line of sweet tropical lime acidity which runs through into the long and gently waning aftertaste. The palate is rich and generous. Excellent harmony between fabulous fruit, oak and acidity. Nic van Aarde has excelled himself. Eminently drinkable now, though would reward you amply after a couple of years of cool cellaring.

The Oldenburg Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2020 is a serious wine, which makes and excellent sipper before a meal or at sundown. I always think of Roast Chicken with Chenin. Asian food like sushi or sashimi, or a Peruvian Ceviche. Carey Boucher Erasmus’s Courgette, Herb & Goat’s Cheese Fritters are the perfect lunchtime snack.
