Two Golden Wine Jubilees At The Hermanus FynArts 2021

4 June 2021  -  Melvyn Minnaar

South Africa's finest wine achievements come under the spotlight in two standout presentations of a mini Wine Plus this year. Celebrating 50 years of great popular appeal, our toasts will be offered to the Stellenbosch Wine Routes organisation and Simonsig’s iconic Kaapse Vonkel sparkling wine.

In two once-off golden jubilee offerings, family and founding members will tell the colourful back stories and present wines for tastings that travel from the present back in time.

This year the venue is The Pavilion at The Marine. The talk-tastings are scheduled for Thursday, June 17 at 12.00 and 17.00.

Up to the time to when the original Stellenbosch Wine Route was founded in 1971 by Frans Malan of Simonsig, Niel Joubert of Spier and Spatz Sperling of Delheim, the concept of wine farm visits for tasting and hands-on information was completely new and original, Wine tourism was yet to start in the Cape’s winelands. Today, what is a given, caused a local revolution 50 years ago.

Johan Malan and Victor Sperling, sons of the founding fathers, Frans Smit of Spier and Braam van Velden of Overgaauw, one of the first estates to join, will tell how it all unfolded. In this midday session among the wines to be poured is Delheim Grand Reserve, Spier 21 Gables Pinotage and Overgaauw Sylvaner.

It was another special year for Frans Malan and his pioneering spirit. That year he made the very first bottle-fermented wine in South Africa. Since 1971 Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel has been a bubbly leader. Son Johan will take punters through the history and the process in the late-afternoon presentation of various bottling of Kaapse Vonkel.

Expect some unusual wines to be poured for tasting. Anticipate some previously untold stories to be told.
