Doktors van der Merwe Emerges Triumphant in the 40th Blaauwklippen Blending Competition: A Celebration of Excellence in Wine Blending
Amidst the sophisticated ambience of the Blaauwklippen Tasting House, the stage was set for the unfolding of the highly-anticipated tasting event of the 40th Blaauwklippen Blending Competition at the renowned Blaauwklippen Wine Estate. This event, a testament to skill and innovation, converged wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts to honour the artistry of blending, guided by the adept leadership of Narina Cloete, the Winemaker and Panel Chair at Blaauwklippen. Accompanying her were four distinguished wine experts: Guy McDonald, Clive Torr, Marius Lategan, and Bussell Retief.
The 2023 competition introduced a distinctive dimension, with participants challenged to harmonize two distinct styles of Shiraz. This intriguing task put their mastery and ingenuity to the test, resulting in a remarkable display of creativity. While the judges were initially unaware of the triumphant club, their unanimous recognition of the standout wine blend was unequivocal.
In alphabetical order, the five wine clubs that secured their place in the finals were: Doktors van der Merwe (Western Cape), Kempton Park Wine Circle (Gauteng), Merlotz (Western Cape), Tygerberg Wine Tasting Guild (Western Cape), and Venterhootsenmarkram (Western Cape).
The announcement of the victor, selected from the pool of 64 participating wine clubs, took centre stage on the 25th of August during a jubilant luncheon held within the splendid new Blaauwklippen Tasting House. The revelation of the 40th Blaauwklippen Blending Competition Winner was a moment that held the wine world in suspense and did not disappoint.
The prestigious accolade was bestowed upon Doktors van der Merwe, a well-deserved honour reflecting the culmination of meticulous and harmonious blending. A blind tasting of the 64 submissions underscored the distinctiveness of Doktors van der Merwe’s blend, notable for its aromatic tapestry featuring notes of spicy plum, dark chocolate, and opulent floral nuances on the nose. The palate revealed an exquisite refinement, followed by a lingering finish that encapsulated the essence of luxury.
