Waterford Estate reveals
vibrant new Wine offering

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the 2019 Waterford Antigo, the Estate’s first ever commercial release of a Bordeauxstyle blend. Waterford Estate is located on the Helderberg Mountain, renowned for producing some of the best red wines in South Africa, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. Adopting its name from the colour of the soils in which this specific Cabernet vineyard is planted, Antigo, meaning rose-gold, refers to the red, clay-rich soils found on the northeastern slopes of the Estate, adjacent to the Pecan Stream. The original plan was to release it as another single varietal wine, but due to the uniqueness of the site and its grapes; it inspired the creation of this blend. Compared to the Table Mountain sandstone and granite found on our other Cabernet vineyards, the grapes from the Antigo block produces wines with more plush, elegant fruit aromatics. The clay and coolness of the site also reduces stress and therefore creates tannins which are softer, sweeter, and more integrated than other areas. 79% Cabernet Sauvignon drives the blend, with the blending components of 16% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot adding complexity and depth. The majority of the grapes blended in Antigo come from vineyards on the Estate, with a small percentage being sourced from other farms in the Helderberg region. The grapes are hand-harvested and whole-berry fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged in French oak for 20 months, with a small percentage in brand new barrels and the remaining in older oak to preserve the soft texture and fruitiness of the wine. No fining is practiced on this wine, and it is vegan friendly.

WINEMAKER
Antigo has been a passion project for our newly appointed COO and Head Winemaker, Mark le Roux and plays an integral part in emphasizing our brand as a premium producer. Mark joined Waterford Estate in 2009 and has been responsible for the winemaking since 2013. Tim Atkin named him South Africa’s Young Winemaker of the Year in 2017. He is committed to making premium, high-quality wine, that is unpretentious and authentic. He strongly believes that winemaking should not interfere with the natural characteristics attained by the terroir.
