Established in 1812, Remhoogte—Dutch for “Brake Heights”—lies on the steep southwestern slopes of the renowned Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. The estate’s soils, over 250 million years old, are among the oldest in any wine region globally, contributing to wines that are deeply expressive and rooted in a strong sense of place.
Now owned by the Boustred family—only the third family to hold the estate—they are the first to produce wine from its vineyards. A true family-run operation, the second generation, brothers Chris (Winemaker) and Rob (Sales and Marketing), have taken over the reins from their parents, Murray and Juliet Boustred.
The estate focuses on premium red wines, particularly Bordeaux varietals and South Africa’s own Pinotage, which thrive in the region’s ideal terroir. For white wines, the emphasis is on old-vine Chenin Blanc, a variety that excels in the area’s conditions.
All vineyard and cellar work is done by hand, supported by eight resident families who live and work on the estate. Guided by a philosophy of minimal intervention, Remhoogte is committed to sustainability, farming with future generations in mind to preserve the health of the soils and vines. One-third of the estate has been set aside for the conservation of the Western Cape’s indigenous flora and fauna.
